Helen Dunn says that while preparing a feed for the baby both parents fell asleep and the milk boiled over putting out the gas flame. They both died from carbon monoxide poisoning but the baby survived. Baby John went to live with his uncle Cecil Allely for a while but he was subsequently adopted by his aunt Lena & uncle John (Crowe). At 16 he joined the army and changed his name back to Allely.
