The discrepancy in the years of birth for William and Mary comes from the 1851 and 1861 censuses which shows two very different ages for both. There are also discrepancies with respect to some of the children's ages. I must check the date when the 1861 census was actually done.

The 1891 census shows a Isiah Near, age 17 as a farm labourer living with the James Elgie family in West Nissouri Township (page 2, line 11). Also on page 8, lines 19 to 21, there are George Near, age 55, a widower; William Near and Lilly Near, son and daughter, ages 11 and 7 on April 6, 1891. They are Methodists and farm labourers.

There is another Near family on page 30. There is Peter age 49, born in Ontario, with parents born here, a methodist farmer; his mother Nancy, age 72, with her parents born in Ontario; Emily age 42, (L?) and Sarah age 40, (L?)

I have also found a Jacob near on page 37, age 68. I suspect that he is William's brother, as he was born in 1823 in Ontario but with his parents both born in the USA. His wife is Elizabeth age 62, born in Ontario with parents born in Ireland. The children are Mary age 32; Skarlet, age 27; John, age 25 William age 22 and Edward age 20. In the 1852 census, there is a Jacob. He is 29 on his next birthday - the census was January 11, 1852. His wife is Elizabeth 23. The children are Mary, 4 and Mary Anne, 1. His widow mother, Elizabeth, 66, lives with them. They live at lot 4, concession 29.

His daughter's biography says that he was born near Niagara Falls, Canada West.

Her name is spelled "Butters" in the notes sent to me by Jackie Halterman. She is said to be from Motherwell, Ontario.
In the 1910 US census, she is with her daughter Sarah Jane and her Husband in Oklahoma. She died there 3 years later.

This daughter of John Timms and Mary Trevor is not on the list of children prepared by aunt Vera. Was it lack of knowledge or did she die young? She is five years old in the 1871 census which occurred on April 2, 1871. So theoretically she had to be born prior to April 2, 1866. There is a death certificate for a Sophia Timm, or Timms, who died on May 6, 1886 at age 17 years, 4 months, and 14 days. That would make her born on December 22, 1885, which would certainly match. Her death occurred at Wallace in Perth County. Wallace is about 70 kilometers north of St. Marys. On the other hand, there are a number of entries for deaths of persons with the last name Timm in Wallace, so it might well not be her.

According to Maisie Dunn, Margaret Kennedy was born at 80 Tomb(e) St., Belfast, Co. Antrim, Ireland. Tombe St. is now near the docks in the commercial area of Belfast. From the same source, her birth certificate says her parents were David Kennedy and Margaret Robinson but her baptism certificate from St. Annes Cathedral says David Kennedy and Margaret Robson. She never attended school as education was not compulsory until 1923. At the age of ten she went into service as a maid.

Maisie's daughter, Helen Dunn, say that the two children died in 1897 during a measles epidemic. Robert Mason died 3 months later of tuberculosis. She says that Nellie's hearing difficulties were perhaps caused by a bout of measles. (Who is Nellie?) Margaret the went to work at in a local thread factory where she met, and then married, Samuel McKinley in 1896. After their marriage, they lived at 27 Downing St. where she lived until 1954 when she moved in with her daughter and her husband.

Margaret Kennedy's birth certificate says that Sarah Wright of 6 New Dock St. was present at the birth and signed by her mark. Helen Dunn says that there was a cousin named Harry Wright who used to visit. Was Sarah a cousin or perhaps an aunt i.e. the sister of Margaret Robinson.

Both children died during an episodic of measles in 1899. It is possible that their cousin Helen (Nellie) also had the measles as the two families were living together at the time.
